Geological Engineering Dept.

ABOUT US

The opening of the Department of Geological Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture has been approved based on the meeting of Higher Education Board held on 14.04.2010,. Our department is ready to offer studies in the field with four assistant professors inside the Engineering – Architecture Faculty which was constructed thanks to the donation Meliha and Ali DİRİKOÇ philantrophists from Nevşehir. It is planned to begin formal education with 40 students in the academic year 2012-2013.

Our country has a very important geological position, because of its great natural resources and potential natural hazard risk. Accurate and efficient utilization of geological resources and elimination of geological hazards (earthquakes, floods, landslides, etc.) should be one of the priorities of our country. The main applications according to the aforementioned scopes are as follows;

  1. Formation of the Earth, physical, chemical and mechanical properties and exploration and proper utilization of natural resources (mining, petroleum, coal, industrial raw materials),
  2. Exploration, development and management of underground water resources,
  3. Site selection of various engineering structures (dams, tunnels, roads, etc.), research and analysis of building materials,
  4. Specifying natural disasters and developing precautions in order to reduce risks.

These procedures could only be carried out by considering the geological science within the framework of engineering principles. Cappadocia Region, which is formed via geological processes, has an enormous contribution to our country's tourism economy. With its unique geological structure it is a natural geology laboratory. Our department graduates have the possibility to work for the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, State Hydraulic Works, Mining Affairs, Ministry of Public Works and its Departments, Provincial Bank, Municipalities, Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, BOTAS, Turkey Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and its companies. In addition, our graduates can perform geotechnical projects in their private office and company. Furthermore, our graduates can take part in engineering structure projects (dams, tunnels, roads, etc.).
